How do QR codes work?
A QR Code is a two-dimensional, machine-readable image code consisting of an array of black and white squares, that can be read by the camera on a tablet or smartphone. The "QR" stands for 'Quick-Response.'
QR Codes can be used for a variety of purposes such as linking to a website or social media page, sending an e-mail, viewing photos, downloading PDFs, or playing MP3s.
You've probably seen them on the labels of products you already use.
Often times they direct the user to a page where they can learn more about the product their holding in their hand.
They were developed by Denso Wave, a subsidiary of the Toyota Corporation; as a means of tracking cars on the assembly line. Denso Wave holds the patent on the technology to this day but has granted a free license on it.
The three large "eyes" on every QR Code act as alignment points while smaller lines of dots running between the eyes act as formatting guides. The remaining squares all contain binary data points that can be interpreted as alphanumeric text.
QR Codes can contain up to 100x more data than a traditional bar code.
